I Did It My Way And Quickly At That

My name is Rev. Merl Moore. I am a wedding officiant, bridal consultant, coordinator & a planner. The shortest wedding I ever performed took about 20 seconds. Here's the story. Almost five years ago I met with a bride and groom to plan their ceremony. The mother of the groom kept telling the bride that a wedding has to follow a certain format. They asked me about that and my answer was, "no, this is your wedding, we can do whatever you want." She didn't want her future mother-in-law telling her what to do. They asked me how short I could make it. I told them I could bring it down to five minutes. The bride said, "shorter." How about three minutes? The bride said, "shorter." I said I guess I could bring it down to one minute if I had to. The bride said, "if you absolutely have to, okay, but the shorter the better." I thought about what I had to do legally, then I suggested what is about to follow. It would have been a very beautiful wedding. There was three candelabras with 48 candles. We had two candle lighters go down the aisle to light those candles. Then the groom escorted both mothers down the aisle. He then took his place in front of me. They each had 5 attendants walking down the aisle. A 7 year old ring bearer came next. They had 2 flower girls, ages 5 & 6, one throwing rose petals on one side of the aisle and the other one throwing rose petals on the other side of the aisle. The bride did not have a dad, so she walked herself down the aisle. When she got in front of me, I covered the lapel mic I was wearing, and asked them both if they still wanted to do this. They both smiled & said yes. I took a deep breath and said, "Do you Steve take Sylvia to be your wife?" He said, "yeah." I said, "Do you Sylvia take Steve to be your husband?" She said, "yeah." I said, "kiss her, let's eat cake." They exited down the aisle with the entire bridal party right behind them. I always step forward to shake the parents hands after the bridal party exits. The mother of the bride just had a blank stare on her face. The mother of the groom crossed her arms and glared at me. I did shake hands with the grooms father, and almost 5 years later, my hand still hurts. I got out of there in a big hurry after that; I didn't want to deal with the parents.
