How to Choose a Band

As a professional Entertainment Manager for Hornblower Cruises & Events, I believe the most important ingredient to a successful wedding is that the bride and groom choose an entertainer whom they are comfortable with. If you do not feel perfectly content with a particular entertainer - keep interviewing.

Professional entertainers view weddings and receptions much the same way the bride and groom do - to have a memorable time without hiccups. It is essential for the success of the wedding that the entertainer asks questions of the bride and groom to get a feeling for the type of wedding they expect. Some entertainers are very outgoing and will "pump up" the crowd, however, if your event is very upscale and elegant you would not want loud dance music throughout the entire event. Many couples have a clear idea of how their wedding or reception should transpire - but for some this is their first experience with a DJ or a band. In this respect the entertainment must take the lead and offer suggestions.

In this modern age, the trend for weddings is less traditional, and personalized weddings and receptions are more frequent. This means that the entertainment must get specifics on how the couple would like the reception to flow. There are many things to consider - the introduction of the happy couple, first dance, Mother and Father dances, last song, cake cutting, and garter and bouquet toss. If you have employed a professional wedding coordinator, he or she should take the lead and schedule the order of events, but more and more often the DJ leads in this arena. Make sure that all of your suppliers (entertainment, photographer, videographer, wedding coordinator) have a schedule of how the event will transpire.

I spend a lot of time combining the perfect match of wedding couple and entertainment. There are many entertainment options, and each wedding venue can be perfectly paired with a certain type of entertainment. From a strolling violinist, a cappella singer, guitarist, to a jazz group or rock and roll band, each venue can be dressed up to match the style of wedding that you envision.

If you are talking to an Entertainment Manager or Location Manager ask about Wedding Packages and what options you have to substitute your own preferred entertainer. In many cases you may truly get a better DJ or entertainer by accepting a "preferred house" vendor. But, even in a Package there should be a choice of DJ's according to the type of event you want to book. No one DJ can possibly be the best choice for EVERY type of event.
